About the project

KAPLA is a nine-storey timber tower in Münchenstein near Basel: 18 cooperative apartments rising around 30 metres on the site of a former kindergarten, completing a housing estate the Basler Wohngenossenschaft has run since 1974.

The slender point building — approved by the municipal assembly with 91 votes to 3 — uses timber-frame construction with hollow-box floors, built from Swiss softwood and hardwood. Rents sit 15 to 20 percent below market, and every apartment looks out diagonally across the Birs valley.

Ready for occupation from 2026, KAPLA shares its ground with an orchard, a playground and a central neighbourhood square — affordable height, community at its feet.
