About the project

In Splügen, at 1,450 metres in the Rheinwald valley, the municipality itself is the developer: a five-storey apartment building with 15 rental flats reserved as primary residences, next to the schoolhouse.

The project is the community's answer to a shortage of year-round housing in a mountain valley where holiday homes crowd out locals — an active stand against depopulation, built in timber from Swiss forests.

Scheduled for 2026, the building shows a mountain municipality investing in its own future with the region's own material: homes that keep families in the valley, in a structure that keeps forest carbon locked away for decades.
