About the project
Steinach's new sports hall replaces the village's 50-year-old gymnasium with a timber building serving school and clubs alike — a triple-divisible double hall with foyer, stands and changing rooms on the school campus.
The winning design of a 2020 architectural competition, the hall is spanned by a roof of slender, serially arranged glulam ribs — an elegant demonstration of what engineered timber can do with Swiss wood. The structure was raised by a local timber builder within a single year.
In use since 2025, the hall shows that even robust public sports infrastructure can be built as a carbon store, its climate benefit certified under the Rainbow Standard.
