Holzbau Austria, 22.12.2025: article “Holzfensterhersteller modernisiert rundum ökologisch”

After around 100 years, Styrian window and door manufacturer Kapo is reinventing itself. On 22 December 2025, Holzbau Austria reports on its revised product range and new production site in the Ökopark Hartberg. According to the company, Kapo plans to work with Timber Finance to have the carbon in its building certified, a first for a timber building in Austria.

A new timber building on a former landfill

The new headquarters is being built on a former construction waste landfill, so no additional land is sealed. The two production halls, now nearly complete, use a truss design with clear spans of 30 metres, and the administration building with showroom is made of cross-laminated timber. A photovoltaic system with an initial 111 kWp, expandable to 630 kWp, and an in-house biomass heating plant are meant to make production largely energy self-sufficient. General planning is by Eckhart Consulting.

Founded in 1927, Kapo is run by Stefan Polzhofer in the fourth generation. The company avoids biocides in wood protection and relies on hydrophobic treatment instead, which is intended to support circularity. A research project is also exploring how to produce biochar from old timber window frames.

Timber windows in a niche

According to the article, timber windows now hold a market share of less than five percent in Austria. Kapo offers 28 window systems in timber and timber-aluminium, as well as doors and facades, among other products.

How Timber Carbon sees it

The project shows that industrial and commercial timber buildings can also keep carbon out of the atmosphere for the long term. Timber Carbon, launched in 2026 as a spin-off of Timber Finance, quantifies, certifies and monetises the carbon removed in such buildings as carbon removal credits on the voluntary carbon market. Our Build biobased page explains how developers can get started.
