Talk at the Rencontres de l'élimination du carbone in Paris: a speaker presents five key messages on the carbon removal market, next to an AFEN banner.

Elodie Vignon joined the Rencontres de l'élimination du carbone in Paris on 13 and 14 October 2026, hosted by the French association AFEN. Policymakers, financiers and buyers from Europe and North America discussed one question on every panel: how does carbon dioxide removal (CDR) move from pilots to a functioning market?

What we took away

  • Buyers think in portfolios. They spread purchases across credit types to reduce delivery risk, usually with no single type above 30% of the mix.
  • Compliance is coming, and early movers will benefit. The EU ETS and the new SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard increasingly account for carbon removals. Buyers who set up due diligence and procurement now will be ready when demand tightens.
  • The removal gap is large. As Kirsty Harrington (University of Oxford) showed, the 2026 State of Carbon Removal report puts the shortfall against the Paris Agreement goals for 2050 at 5.2 gigatonnes, while many CDR companies still struggle to access public funding.

Where Timber Carbon fits

Our credits come from the carbon removed in mass timber buildings. Trees capture carbon as they grow, and building with timber locks that carbon into the structure for decades to centuries. We have issued our first Timber Carbon Credits under the Rainbow Standard, from a portfolio of 90 buildings in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. We only accept certified wood in line with the EU Deforestation Regulation, and we deduct transport emissions from the carbon we credit.

For buyers building a removal portfolio

  • Removals that are already delivered and verified
  • Durable removals in buildings, positioned between nature-based and technological solutions
  • A pathway aligned with the EU's work on a CRCF methodology for buildings
  • European projects that support the shift to low-carbon construction

The market is moving toward durable, credible removals, and buyers who engage now will help shape it. If you are building your CDR portfolio, let's talk. More on our credits: Buy Credits.

Thank you to AFEN and all speakers for an excellent programme.
