About the project
The Hafenwerkstätten bring timber construction into the Port of Hamburg: five buildings with around twenty flexible commercial units for craft, production and logistics businesses on the Peute peninsula, minutes from the Elbbrücken.
Both the load-bearing structure and the façades are wood — a complete modular timber system with cellulose insulation, rising on heavy-duty piled foundations in the harbour ground. Ground-floor halls with full-height gates make the buildings genuinely industrial-grade.
Powered by district heating and large rooftop photovoltaics, the project proves that even a working harbour district can grow in wood. Completion is scheduled for 2027 — port infrastructure as a long-term carbon sink, certified under the Rainbow Standard.
