About the project
GRACK 1 is the first stage in renewing the Grossacker estate in Zürich-Witikon — a replacement build at Buchholzstrasse 82/84, part of a 1970s neighbourhood of affordable rental housing being carefully brought into its next era.
Designed by hbf huggenbergerfries architekten, the five-storey building is constructed in timber, with over 1,100 cubic metres of Swiss wood in its structure — renewing post-war housing stock without the carbon bill of demolition and concrete reconstruction.
Scheduled for completion in 2027, GRACK 1 stands for a quiet, increasingly common transformation: affordable city housing, rebuilt in wood, storing the carbon of Swiss forests above the streets of Zürich.
