A city built from timber does something no other city does: it keeps carbon out of circulation for as long as its buildings stand. This short film follows that idea through the urban scale, from the forest that supplies the material to the neighbourhoods that are built from it, and makes the case that the built environment can be an extension of the forest rather than its opposite.

The city as a carbon store

Carbon that a forest removes from the air stays in the wood, and in a timber building it stays in the load-bearing structure for decades. At the scale of a single house that is a rounding error. At the scale of a district, it is a meaningful stock, and it grows with every project that chooses timber over a material whose production emits.

What it takes to count

The argument only holds if the numbers are real. That means knowing how much carbon a specific building holds, having the removal verified under internationally recognised standards, and keeping the record for as long as the building stands. That is our work: Timber Carbon quantifies the carbon locked into a load-bearing structure and issues Timber Carbon Credits for it, which turns the climate performance of a building into something a project can be financed on.
